Prerequisites
Basic knowledge about structural design and steel design, which includes as minimum
• Global stability in buildings.
• Statical analysis and the connection between structures and static calculations.
• Determine loads on buildings and structures according to Eurocodes
• Basic static for beams, columns and frames.
• Basic principles and methods of the elastic strength of materials and deformation calculations
• Stress analysis of structural elements
• Have knowledge about cross-sectional capacity checks for steel according to Eurocode 3
Main purpose
The course builds upon the basic principles of structural steel developed in the previous courses at the programme. The aim of the course is to enable the student to create structural steel systems and undertake calculations of load bearing steel structures, including connections in ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state.
Knowledge
After completion of the course, the students must:
– Have knowledge about different types of steel structures (e.g. industrial buildings, hangars).
– Have knowledge about the principles for calculation of plate elements with stiffeners and be able to calculate a chosen few.
– Have knowledge about the resistance of transverse forces (design resistance of webs in plate girders).
– Have knowledge about flange induced web buckling.
– Have basic knowledge of fire design for structural steel.
– Have knowledge of various steel connection types.
– Have a basic understanding of load transfer in steel connections.
Skills
After completion of the course, the students must:
– Be able to model globally stable structural steel systems.
– Be able to calculate buckling of plates, eg. in welded plate girders.
– Be able to calculate cross sections in class 4 using the effective cross section in the ultimate limit state.
– Be able to calculate a plate girder with respect to lateral torsional buckling.
– Analysis of bracing systems which are required to provide lateral stability of beams and compression members (eg. columns).
– Be able to calculate restraint in structural parts subject to compression.
– Be able to analyse/calculate some chosen structural steel connections (eg. welded connections in portal frames, design tension resistance of a T-stub flanges in plate girders).
Competences
After completion of the course, the student must be able to use knowledge and skill within all subject areas to plan and make relevant choices of techniques and theories in order to solve structural design project.
Topics
Teaching methods and study activities
The course is scheduled for 12 weeks with 4 lectures each week. Workload for the students corresponds to 138-hour.
Activities vary between theoretical lectures, self-studies, consultation periods in connection to the work with assignments and students presentation of assignments.
